IRAN TEACHERS STRIKE UPDATE
Sunday, 29 April 2007 Iran’s teachers stage another strike Teachers in Iran have staged another nationwide strike today in the follow-up to their over two-month long struggle over pay and conditions and to press for the release of their jailed colleagues. According to a WPI report from Iran today, Tehran’s secondary school teachers were on strike in the capital’s Education Districts 5, 6, 15, 16, 17 and 18. In District 5 around 800 teachers assembled for several hours outside the education offices from around 11 o’clock local time. Meanwhile the government’s intimidation of the teachers has continued. The Education Ministry has asked for the submission of the names of two teachers in any school that has gone on strike. 45 teachers are reported to have been arrested in the cities of Ardebil and Hamedan in north-west Iran. Today’s action was called by the “Co-ordinating Council of All-Iran Teachers’ Trade Organisations” (an umbrella organisation for ‘Teachers’ Trade Centres’ in various cities and regions), who have announced further actions for 2nd and 8th May. --------------------------------------------------- Further details of today’s strike in our next Update. www.kargaran.org Head office: Co-ordinator: Shahla Daneshfar shahla_daneshfar@yahoo.com Public Relations: Bahram Soroush b.soroush@ukonline.co.uk Publicity: Hasan Salehi hasan_salehi2001@yahoo.com Around the world: Australia: Arsalan Nazeri workers_in_iran@yahoo.com.au Belgium: Hossein Pishehesan workersiniran_belgique@yahoo.fr Canada: Mehran Mahbobi workersiniranca@yahoo.ca Finland: Abdol Golparian workers_iniran@yahoo.com Germany: Reza Nouri workeriniran_de@yahoo.de Norway: Saber Rahimi workeriniran@yahoo.no Sweden: Mamad Amiri workersiniran_se@yahoo.se UK: Shiva Mahbobi workersiniranuk@yahoo.com
