IndustriALL Conference resolution in support of jailed workers in
Andrew Dettmer the National
President of Australian Manufacturing Workers Union on behalf of 100000
workers gave a resolution to the Conference of the International
Federation of Industrial Workers(IndustriALL) that between 14 to
16 May 2014 was held in Bangkok. This resolution condemned the Islamic
Regime of Iran for permanent suppression of workers and political
freedom in Iran.
1. Notes the continued repression of trade union and political rights
in the Islamic Republic of Iran ("Iran");
2. Notes the continued failure of the Iranian Government to accord full
personal and political rights to Iranian citizens;
3. Notes the failure of the Iranian Government to implement ILO
Conventions 87 and 98 on the Freedom of Association and the Right to
Organise, and the Right to Organise and Collectively Bargain
Specifically, this meeting notes that Mr Reza Shahabi has been
imprisoned for legitimate trade union activity and is serving a six-year
prison sentence, as well as being fined 70 million rials (US$5,700) and
banned from all trade union activities for five years.
This meeting respectfully calls upon the Iranian authorities to release
Mr Shahabi immediately and unconditionally as he is a prisoner of
conscience held solely for his peaceful trade union activities.
This meeting further requests that the officers of IndustriALL commence
dialogue with the representatives of the Iranian Government, either
directly or through the ITUC and ILO, to seek to resolve these issues.
The continued repression of political parties and of political action,
often at pain of death, is denying the full measure of democracy to the
people of Iran. The interests of all IndustriALL members would be
enhanced by the granting of full rights to organise, to debate and to
dissent to the people of Iran and this would in turn allow the full
development of Iranian workers' rights.
This meeting requests that the matter of Iranian rights be listed for
discussion at the Executive Committee of IndustriALL at its June
meeting, and that the matter be placed on the agenda for the L20 meeting
